  • Heat waves can have serious adverse effects on the human body.

  • Children under 5 years of age or elderly and people who have hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and mental illness can receive relatively more health damage from heatwaves.

  • The diseases from heat wave can be heatstroke, heat exhuastion, heat prostration, etc.

  • Many experts say that the cause of the heat is global warming.

  • In many countries, therefore, there is a special note about the heat. 'Heatwatch warning' occurs when the maximum daytime temperature is more than 33 degrees Celsius for up to two days.

The United States of America
  • This map shows that the high temperature from North American heat wave in 2018.

  • In United States, the temperature at UCLA was 111'F.

  • The combination of heat wave and dryness fueled wildfires that results losing national budgets and people.

  • Specifically, Arizona recorded 111'F on July and Colorado was 105'F, which was like a disaster.

  • In Canada, At least 70 deaths were heat-related in Quebec.

Chicago heat wave: 

From July 12 to July 16, 1995, Chicago showed a heat wave. The highest temperature was 40 degrees Celsius. Between July 11 and 27, 465 people died from high temperatures, more than half of them were aged 75 or older.

  • This graph shows that heat-related deaths from 1986 to 2012.

  • More than 700 casualties were killed in connection with Chicago heat wave.

  • Result of Chicago heat wave has shown that the elderly and low-income people are most victim. 

  • The night-time temperature is one of important factors because it is hard to take a rest or recover if the temperature continues high in night as well as the day.

  • In 2003, the hottest recorded summer in Europe happened.

  • In Southern Europe crop shortfall was created by drought and many people were suffered from deadly heat wave.

  • France was hit especially hard as it had 14,802 deaths(most elderly). The Maximum temperature was about 41.1 in Auxerre

  • Unbelievably, the death toll was estimated at more than 70,000 people

  • In Germany, shipping could not navigate the Elbe and Danube(Major rivers in Eupope) from the resulf of low water levels.

  • In Switzerland, glaciers in the Alps melted that occured avalanches and flash floods.

  • In a short time, the number of deaths was too high to accommodate the body in the hospital.

South Korea and Japan
  • This graph shows that casualties was rising from April to July in 2018 Japan.

  • The casualties rose up to 9,956 in July.

  • The temperatures climbed above 40 degrees celsius which led almost 10,000 people suffered.

  • Most of the emergencies happened at home, nearly about 13.5 of the patients suffered heat stroke at work(factories or construction site)

  • Japan has exceeded 35 degrees Celsius in the Honshu region in particular since July.

  • This heatwave killed more than 125 people in Japan by July 29. In July 23, Japan's Kamagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, recorded a record high of 41.1 degrees Celsius per day in Japan.

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency said it was the worst heatwave in history.

  • On July 14, six people died per day due to the heatwave and 1,535 were transferred to the hospital.

  • Between 15 and 22 July, 65 people died.

  • On July 17th, an ambulance was delivered 2,900 times a day.

  • In South Korea, 3,384 people died in 1994, the warmest in Korea.

  • In addition, many livestock were killed in various regions including Gyeonggi, Incheon, Chungnam and Jeonbuk by 2013.

  • In 2018, 42 people were killed. The temperature reached 39.6 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in 111 years.

  • In addition, the number of people with warm illnesses was 4,515. Seoul was the worst at 39.6 degrees Celsius, while Hongcheon had the highest temperature below 41 degrees Celsius.
